Thomas enlisted as a Private on May 17, 1862 in Trenton, Dade County, Georgia in Company F, 34th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry Division. Captured on July 4, 1863 and a POW at Vicksburg, Mississippi and paroled on July 8, 1863. Captured again in April, 1865. Took an oath of allegiance to the United States Government on July 8, 1865.
