23 year old Alvin henson Childress Jr, married almost 18 yr old, Ernestine V. Counts on 9/23/1933 in Bristol, VA.
Alvin enlisted in the Army Mar 15, 1944 but was almost immediately in the hospital on Nov 1944 and discharged from there and the Army in 3/1945 for a medical disability. By 1946, he was the Vice President General Manager of Big Lick Motors in Roanoke VA.
According to E.J. Sutherlands research contained in the book, Some Descendants of John Counts of Glade Hollow, Alvin & Ernestine had three children, all boys.
Alvin died of pancreatic cancer in 1954, at the young age of 40.
(Perhaps unable to recover or feeling the stress of being a single mother to three children, Ernestine committed suicide the following year, 1955. She was also 40. Their son, Alvin Jr., was the informant. It is unknown what became of their children.
