BILOXI --- Ellen Grace Faulkenberry Tolbert died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, the day of her fifty-third wedding anniversary.

Ellen was born on September 17, 1928 in Lyman, Mississippi. She was predeceased by seven siblings: Claude, Opal, Jay, Gertrude, Jesse, Edmund and John, who were the children of W.J. and Emily Scarborough Faulkenberry. She and her family moved to Pascagoula, Mississippi during the war years. Ellen graduated from Pascagoula High School in 1946, was a member of the Beta Club and a lead singer with the high school choral group.

Several years after high school, Ellen met Bill Tolbert at a dance on Keesler Air Force Base. A whirlwind romance ensued, leading them to a joyous wedding on March 13, 1949. They moved to Toledo, Ohio and lived there for ten years, having two children, Cynthia and Jeffrey. The whole family returned to the Gulf Coast in 1959. Once on the coast, Ellen never moved away again.

While living in Biloxi, Ellen became a founding member and officer of the Bay Vista Garden Club, as well as the Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, where she organized and participated in charitable, philanthropic, and community enriching projects.

She was a full time homemaker and mother for many years, but renewed her earlier career as a dental assistant, working as Doctor Guy C. Lewis' assistant for twenty--two years. Ellen was a member of the J. T. Leggett United Methodist Church from 1959 until 1991, where she served as Sunday School Superintendent and Sunday School teacher. She joined First United Methodist Church of Biloxi in 1991.

Ellen's middle name was Grace and to her husband and everyone she met, she was truly their "Amazing Grace." Giving and doing for others was the mainstay of her life and the true "gracious" expression of her Christian faith. Ellen had an amazing music talent. She enjoyed playing stride piano and always sang with an incredible voice. She loved to shop (especially for others), decorate her home of forty-three years and cook feasts for many happy recipients.

Ellen is survived by her husband O. W. "Bill" Tolbert, her two children, Cynthia Tolbert of Atlanta, Georgia, Jeffrey Tolbert of Brooklyn, New York, and four grandchildren, Charles L. Desporte, Jr. of New Orleans, Louisiana, Laura Desporte of San Antonio, Texas, Sara Tolbert and Justin Tolbert of Brooklyn, New York.

Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Biloxi on Monday, March 18, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be held between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Evergreen Gardens Cemetery in Gulfport, Mississippi.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Biloxi. Funeral arrangements are made by Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home on Pass Road in Biloxi.
