William married Eva Ernestine Downing on April 13, 1941, in Marshalltown. He served with the United States Army in the South Pacific during World War II. William and Eva had 3 children: William B. II, Ellen, and Joseph Bradley.
Bill was the owner of American Transfer and Storage Company which had been in his family for 50 years.
In February 1952, he was named to fill an unexpired term on City Council. He was re-elected Councilman-at-Large in 1954 and 1956 and elected Mayor in 1958. He served for 10 years, was defeated in 1967, then was re-elected in 1969. He was Marshalltown's only 6-term Mayor.
During his tenure in office, he was instrumental in obtaining federal and state funding for two flood-control projects (one including the 12th Street viaduct) and expansion of the sewage treatment plant. He obtained voter approval of a bond issue for a municipal airport, after 20 years of rejection. He also kept tax levies within bounds. His behind-the-scenes efforts contributed to donations that provided Marshalltown with a new public swimming pool, which was named after him.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Frank Lewis Glick Post No. 46 of the American Legion, the BPOE Elks No. 312, and Matins Kiwanis.
William Bernard Crosby passed away on May 9, 1971, at Community Hospital East in Marshalltown. He is survived by his wife, Eva; his children, William B. "Bill" Crosby II, Ellen Benson, and Joseph Bradley Crosby; and by his sisters, Mary Rose Sulanke, and Mary Ann McKillip. He was predeceased by his parents.
