Pastor D. Luke Bowser Jr., 90, Martinsburg, passed away Tuesday at The Village at Morrisons Cove after a brief illness.

"Uncle Luke" was born in Woodbury Township, son of the late D. Luke Sr. and Mary Pearle (Sell) Bowser.

He married Lola Ruth Kensinger of Fredericksburg on Dec. 25, 1944, and she died Dec. 11, 2009, two weeks before their 65th wedding anniversary.

Surviving are three children: the Rev. Thomas L. Bowser and wife, the Rev. Paula Bowser, of Englewood, Ohio, the Rev. JuliAnne Bowser Sloughfy and husband, Gary, of Stanley, Va., and J. William Bowser of Martinsburg; two grandchildren: David Bowser of Manassas, Va., and Laura Bowser of Midlothian, Va.; a brother, the Rev. Harold Bowser and wife, Betty (Hyre), of Everett; a sister-in-law, Loretta (Smith) Bowser of Bedford; a brother-in-law, Dale Miller in Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews of "Uncle Junior."

He was preceded in death by six siblings: Vergie (Brumbaugh) Kagarise, Josephine Brumbaugh, Donald Bowser, LeRoy Bowser, Gertrude Miller and infant John.

Luke was a 1941 graduate of Replogle High School, New Enterprise, and was licensed into the Christian ministry on June 25, 1941, the summer before Pearl Harbor. He was ordained on July 20, 1943. He graduated from Juniata College in Huntingdon in 1946 and from Bethany Theological Seminary (Chicago campus) in 1951.

Luke was a member of Clover Creek Church of the Brethren and had served as a minister for the Church of the Brethren all of his adult life. He enjoyed gardening, history and spending time with his family.

Friends will be received from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Clover Creek Church of the Brethren, 215 Rebecca Furnace Road, Martinsburg, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, by Pastors David Banaszak, Linda Banaszak and Paul Stutzman.

Interment will be made at Brumbaugh Cemetery, Fredericksburg.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Luke's memory may be given to Heifer International or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
