CLAYTON, Ill. -- Chester H. Smith, 85, a retired Clayton farmer, and a resident of Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Mount Sterling, died at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 1, 1992) in Blessing Hospital in Quincy.
Born May 9, 1906, in Clayton, Mr. Smith was a son of Charles H. and Rebecca Henning Smith. He married Eva Abel Aug. 25, 1926, in Peoria. She survives.
A graduate of Clayton High School, he was director of the Golden Locker Co-op and a member of the Adams County Farm Bureau and Polled Hereford Association.
Survivors also include a son, Gail Smith of Clayton; a daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Rosemary) Wear of Terre Haute, Ind.; four grandchildren, Terry Smith of Clayton, Mrs. Sam (Lesa) Markert of Camp Point, Boyce Wear of Columbia, Tenn., and Mrs. Jon (Debra) Shoemaker of Atlanta, Ga.; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and six brothers.
Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Hamilton Funeral Home by the Rev. Jerry Bown. Burial will be in South Side Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday before the funeral.
Memorials may be made to Clayton Christian Church or to the Clayton American Legion.
