John Wesley Cornell, aged 80 years civil war veteran, retired farmer and former Goshen groceryman, expired at his home, 418 First street, at 2 o'clock this morning, from illness which had confined him to his home only since last Thursday. He had been in failing health for more than a year and his death was due to complications. He served the local G.A.R. as commander for a period of eight years, seven years of which was continous and was perhaps the most active member of that organization.
Deceased came here from MIddlebury township 29 year ago, and for 15 years was associated with his brothers Milton and Jacob in the grocery business. He was a civil war veteran and served with distinction during the entire period of the war as a member of the 21st Indiana Calvary.
He is survived by his wife and four children, Arthur of Neward, O., Mrs. Max Mahn, of Goshen; Norman of Toledo and Roscoe of Chicago and one brother, Milton residing northwest of Goshen.
The funeral will be held from the home at 3 o'clock Wednesday after noon under the auspices of the G.A.R. Rev. E.A. Vannuys will officiate. Interment in Oak Ridge.
