Abigail Merrill married seaman Joseph Churchill in Portland in 1830. At least 5 children came of that marriage. Joseph died at sea in 1842 and was memorialized on a gravestone in Plymouth Massachusetts featuring an interesting carving of a shipwreck. Abigail, then a widow, died of consumption four years later, in 1846 at age 38, leaving her children as orphans. She was buried at Eastern Cemetery, but no gravestone has survived for her -- if ever there was one placed -- and her exact plot location is not known. One daughter died in 1842 and was also buried there (with no marker).
