Nettie was born on 12/7/1929, in Welling Oklahoma, to Alta and Minerva Burgess. Nettie was a youngster in 1936 when Alta loaded her, her mom and three brothers into a jalopy and moved to Idaho as part of the great migration during the dust bowl and great depression looking for work.
The family settled near Meridian, Idaho where Nettie graduated from High School in 1948. Following graduation she met a young marine recruiter by the name of Larry Gates , home from WWII, and they were married in July of 1950. Nettie and Larry remained married until his death in March of 2001. This marriage produced two sons, Michael Lynn (Kim) and Douglas Burr (Julie) and two grand children (Brett and Andrea). Family lived in Nampa for about 20 years and Nettie worked at a number of accounting and administrative jobs while raising her children.
Nettie remained close to her parents and they often spent time teamed up to raise amazing gardens full of fresh produce. Coming from the depression era, self sufficiency was a trait they possessed. The family pantry was always full of home canned fruits and vegetables. The trips to the local orchards near Lake Lowell to pick peaches, pears and apricots became epic adventures that lasted all day and were followed by long sessions in the kitchen filling Kerr quart bottles with the fresh fruit to be cooked in an old pressure cooker that somehow never blew up. These made for fond memories of a happy time long ago.
Camping was also a prime activity for the family. Nettie was adept at loading the car with kids and gear to travel all over Idaho and eastern Oregon. Many days were spent fishing the creeks, rivers and lakes followed by a fresh fish fry in the evening around a campfire.
As her son's grew up Nettie was an avid fan at all of their sporting events. Larry and Nettie often traveled long distances to watch their sons play at away games.
Later in life she spent many hours with her grand kids. Nettie often travelled with her daughter in law Julie for training events. it is rumored that Nettie kept an eye on the grand kids while Julie was in class. Some questions regarding small candies, a swimming pool, a hotel room on an upper floor and target practice in the direction of the swimming pool might cause pause to this theory. Perhaps a don't ask, don't tell policy is best in this regard.
Nettie and Larry were proud grand parents who did their very best to provide wonderful experiences to their children and grand children. From early trips to Disneyland (by car) to later trips by plane to the magic kingdom (where a certain storm trooper helmet was acquired) to amazing adventures on Maui they showered the grandkids with love and affection.
Following a long illness, Larry passed away in March of 2001. On many occasions he commented that he was so grateful for the care and support Nettie provided during his illness.
Nettie lived alone with her dog Breann for about 5 years. In 2006 she reconnected with an old high school classmate, Howard Adkins, and they became sweethearts which was followed by marriage in October of 2006. Nettie enjoyed the outings to the ranch on the Salmon river very much. They remained married until Nettie's death on March 28, 2018.
Nettie was preceded in death by her parents and her two bothers, Delbert and Glen. She is survived by her children, grand children and her brothers Tom and Theron, and her second husband Howard Adkins.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Alden Waggoner in Boise, Idaho. There will be no viewing and a graveside service will be held at Morris Hill Cemetery on March 31st at 10:00 am.
Our family would like to thank the care givers at the Elm neighborhood of the memory care unit at Touchmark in Meridian for the care and compassion they showed to mom during her stay with them. Also, thanks for the support and kindness shown by the staff at Keystone Hospice. Both of these groups helped immensely in keeping Nettie comfortable and providing support to the family through this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations to would be appreciated.
