Obituary: Elizabeth Gentry

Elizabeth Estes Gentry, 94, of St. Louis died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1993 at the home of her daughter in St. Louis.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis. Graveside services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday in the Columbia Cemetery with the Rev. John Yonker officiating. There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Gentry was born March 29, 1899, in Boone County to Ambrose Estes and Narcissus Denny Estes. She married William Gentry Jr., and he preceded her in death. She had lived in St. Louis since her marriage and was active in many educational, charitable and socia1 organizations. Twice, she served as president of Memorial Home of St. Louis and remained on its board for more than 40 years. She was also president of the St. Louis Women's Club, the Woman's Association of Pilgrim Congregational Church, the Mother's Council of John Burroughs School and the Pi Beta Phi Alumnae Club. She was also active in the Wednesday Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of 1812.

In 1970, she was named Distinguished Alumna of the Year by Columbia College and was honorary chairwoman of the college's capital fund campaign in 1992. In 1930, she was the founding president of the college's St. Louis alumnae club and later was the founding president of its nationa1 alumnae organization. She was also a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, serving as the society editor of The Missourian until her marriage. She was the MU Harvest Queen in 1922 and represented Boone County as Maid of Honor at Missouri's Centennial Celebration in 1921.

Survivors included on daughter, Elizabeth Sayad of St. Louis; and two grandchildren.
