Ada was born in Porter Township, Porter County, Indiana, the daughter of Noah and Lydia (Baker). Her father was a farmer.

She married Archibald "Archie" Kenworthy on June 7, 1893 in Porter County. The couple settled in Porter Township, where her husband farmed. Three children came from the union: Owen, Ray and a son who died shortly after birth. Her husband died in 1911.

After the death of Archie, Ada married Charles J. Butler on August 19, 1913 in Porter County. The family removed to Cleghorn, Cherokee County, Iowa where Charles was a school teacher. By 1920, Ada's sons had moved back to Porter County, and she and her husband lived in Iowa City, Iowa where she was a waitress and according to the census record, Charles attended school.

Charles and Ada moved to Chicago by 1930 where he was a security guard and she worked in the kitchen of a hospital. Although the couple never divorced, it appears they went onto live separate lives. Charles moved to Michigan, and Ada lived in Valparaiso, Indiana.
