"Rev. James Bignal was baptized by Eld. Wire [Samuel] in 1820, and in 1828, he was ordained by the Holland Purchase Y.M. of Freewill Baptists, at Potter, NY. His early labors were in western New York and northern Pennsylvania. The esteem in which he was held is evinced by his serving as a delegate from Holland Purchase Yearly Meeting to the General Conference of 1831 and 1835 from NY and PA, Yearly Meegings in that of 1844. One of the two last named he was made ass't moderator. The Conference Hymn Book was published by him in the early years and ran through several additions. In 1844, he moved to Ingrahm Co. MI where he labored ten years. After this he continued the work until his death. Bro. Bignal associated with Revs David Marks, Samuel Wire, and others, enduring the hardships of the itinerant period joyfully that he might win souls.
He was a safe counselor, a good deciplinarian, sometimes pronounced "ahead of the times" and never a laggard in any good work. His children are useful members of the church."
He was married to Sarah KNAPP.
She was in the Free Will Baptist Church in Barrington, NY, which her father, Matthew KNAPP, was instrumental in organizing. He served as a deacon and then later,was voted by Y.M.(Yearly Meeting) to license him to preach.
