MITCHELL: Leonard Ervin Mitchell, 93, died April 26 at Fort Bayard, the last surviving member of his family. Leonard was born March 24, 1891 in Riverside, Ala, the eldest of nine children of John Thomas and Virginia Mitchell. The family moved from Alabama to Texas when Leonard was a boy. In 1918, Leonard brought his wife and two children to Silver City, where their other three children were born. He came here to take employment at the Rosedale Dairy, where he worked for a number of years. Over the years, he had various other jobs including freight driver to Mogollon at the time the mines were in operation there, driver for G.O. "Pop" Gwen, and in later years he was a car inspector for A.T. & S.F. Railroad at Hurley until his retirement. He was interested in mining and had mining claims that he worked and enjoyed until his health forced him to give up his claims a few years ago. He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Luther "Jack" Mitchell in 1976. He is survived by two daughters, Jewel Pearce of Fort Bragg, Ca. and Mildred Thomas of Silver City; two sons, Raymond of Silver City and James of Albuquerque; 14 grandchildren; 24 great- grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren and a host of friends. Graveside funeral services were held April 30 at the Memory Lane Cemetery with Bishop Terry Heiner officiating. Serving as pallbearers were Raymond Mitchell, James Mitchell, Walter E. Mitchell, Robert Rowland, Michael Vaughn and Julian Wiseman. Honorary pallbearers were Dennis Rothwell, Dwight Mitchell, William Thomas, Jerry Thomas and Charles Thomas.
