Early Clarksville Educators
Professor M.S. Goodman was one of the founders and teachers of an early Clarksville school, the Goodman and Reid Academy. In 1865 he and one other teacher taught in a two-story frame building of six rooms with a capacity to accommodate 275 pupils.
In late 1868, the town's people of Clarksville voted to build a district schoolhouse at a cost of $15,000. A two story frame building was erected atop Robert Hill and was called the "School on the Hill". When the school opened in 1869, there were 100 students attending. At a later date the enrollment reached 300 students and it was considered "a very good classical school.''
When the building burned in 1887, a new brick building was erected at Clarksville's Public Square on Third and Main Cross (where the medical center was built many years later). The "new" public school continued to operate for 64 years before being consolidated into the Clopton R-III school district.
