Son of Samuel H. Fox, Sr. and Mary E. Fox (nee: Veasel). Nine brothers and sisters. Sam (also known as Jimmie; he was a cousin of Jimmie Foxx, who was his childhood baseball idol, and refused to answer to his given name as a child, hence his nickname), was drafted into the Army on Dec 15, 1943, and served with the 186th Combat Engineers in the Philippines and was in the fight against Japan. He was part of the occupation forces in Japan until he was discharged in April of 1946. Sam married Norma L. Coleman on April 18, 1948, later having 3 children (James, Gail, and Joyce). He lived with Norma in Mt Airy, Maryland until his death on July 12, 2002. He was very proud of having been a member of the US Army and was looking forward to seeing the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, but passed away about two years before it was dedicated in May 2004.
