Hannah was born enslaved under the Nelson-Singleton Household. Her parents were Zara Humphrey Jones and Benjamin Ellis Nelson.
Hannah spent most of her life as a laundress. she was a widow of Daniel Gilliam, who had also been enslaved. He served in the Civil War, and died in 1867.
Hannah's son Leander Singleton Gilliam had been fathered by the Plantation Owner William G. Singleton. It is unclear as to how many and what children of Hannah's were fathered by him.
During Reconstruction of the South, Hannah migrated to Worcester, MA with her sister and Brother-in-law Jane B. & Joseph A.Collins. They became leaders of the Black community of Worcester, Massachusetts.
Hannah is the maternal grandmother of Zara Cully Brown who played Mother Jefferson of the television sitcom "The Jefferson."
