Mr Jas W. Harkness was born in Hardin County, Kentucky, May 4, 1848. He was married to Miss Cynthia A Gibson April 18, 1872. To this union were born 8 children, four of whom are living Chas E, resident of this county, Claude F or Iuka, Kansas, Mrs Love DeCrow of Sylvia, Kansas, and Mrs Mary E Peterson of this county. Mrs Harkness having died January 26, 1900. Mr Harkness married Mrs Jane Barger, of Garden City, Kansas, May 24, 1903. To this union was born a son, Brannon Beyrl, who with his mother lives to mourn their loss. Mr Harkness came to Kansas from Kentucky in 1882, settled in Wilson Co., and in 1886 moved to Scott County, taking a homestead. He left here April ?, 1918 for the west in quest of health, finally locating in Colorado City.
Mr Harkness united with the First Missionary Baptist Church in 1879 in Kentucky and united with the Methodist Church in Scott City in May 1895. He died at 7 o'clock pm, January 28, 1914, after an illness of several weeks, at the age of 65 years, 8 months, and 24 days. Funeral services were held at the ME Church in this city on January 30 conducted by Rev Claude I Wallace at which all members of the family were present, and the remains were taken to the Grigsby cemetary [sic cemetery] for burial.
