Francis “Jack” Balk, 81 of Washington, died Sunday, June 3,2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following declining health.
A Memorial Service will be 2:30 PM Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Rev. Fr. Ed O’ Melia officiating. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Military honors will be preformed by American Legion Post #29 of Washington. Jack has donated his body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program. Burial will be at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines at a later date. A general memorial has been established in the name of Francis Balk. Jack was born February 17, 1926 in Waucoma, IA the son of John M. and Bathil (Huber) Balk. He graduated from Waucoma High School in 1943, served with the U.S. Army Air Corp during WW II and graduated from Iowa State University in 1949. He was united in marriage to Mary Patt Abbott September 20, 1952 at St. Augustin Catholic Church in Des Moines.Jack was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He worked for Oscar Mayer, Yoder eeds and was a loan officer at the National Bank in Washington from 1978 till he retired due to health in 1986. He enjoyed gardening, the Iowa State Cyclones, Chicago Cubs and Green Bay Packers.Survivors include his wife Mary Patt of Washington, daughters Kate Gerard of Cedar Rapids, Abbe Rocha and husband Adam of Des Moines, IA; sister Joan D. Griffin and husband Del of Minneapolis, MN and grandson Zachary Dawson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Eugene.
