TROY - Charles J. "Chuck" Boland, 85, died peacefully Monday, July 6, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy.

Born in Troy on December 11, 1923, he was the son of the late Charles J. and Edna Carpenter Boland Sr.

He was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School and later served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He returned home and graduated from Cortland Teachers College with a physical education degree.

He began his career with the Troy City School District in 1948 and in 1954 moved to the new Troy High School where he taught physical education until retiring in 1981.

He served as athletic director for many years and was a highly successful soccer and golf coach. He started the soccer program at Troy High and also coached golf for many years at Troy High School and was a golf instructor for adult education.

He was an avid golfer who enjoyed tournament golf and analyzing and practicing golf. He was a 35-year member of the Troy Country Club, member of the Friends of 112th Street and was inducted into the Edward C. Picken Troy High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

He is the beloved husband of Rhea Henries Boland; devoted father of Charles P. (Marlene) Boland of Troy, David J. (Cathy) Boland of Halfmoon and Stephen J. (Joni) Boland of Troy; proud grandfather of Jennifer, Charlie, Stephanie, Kimberly, Gregory, Derek, Kevin and Carly Boland; brother of the late Catherine McBride and Mary Joan Cardish. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

His funeral Mass will be Thursday morning at 9:30 at Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 North Lake Ave. in Troy. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy.

Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the Doran Funeral Home, 9 South Lake Ave. in Troy, on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m.
