Jos. Mayer Departs this Life of Trials
Death Came Tuesday Evening Following Three Months Illness
Funeral on Friday
The death of Jos. Mayer, well known citizen of Jordan for the past half century or more, occurred at the home of his sister, Mrs. Gertrude Hilgers in Jordan, Tuesday evening. Deceased lived the greatest part of his life in Jordan and for the past twenty years was employed as houseman at the Merchants Hotel. Mr. Mayer was born Oct. 1, 1854 on the Mayer homestead in Belle Prairie Twp. He was the son of pioneer parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clemens Mayer. Deceased was a man who never sought public office but had well defined ideas about political and economic issues. He was wont to discuss these issues with many a guest that visited the hotel. He would greet his friends and acquaintances in friendly manner always. Tenderly Cared For Deceased took in three months ago with cancer of the stomach. When his condition became critical six weeks ago, he was removed to the home of his sister, Mrs. Hilgers and there was tenderly cared for until his death. On Sunday his condition became such that Mrs. Louisa Lenzmeier of Shakopee, who is a trained nurse, came to Jordan to assist during the final illness. The remains are being waked at the Hilger's home. Funeral Arrangements have not been completed at this time, but the requiem mass will be read from St. John's Catholic church on Friday. Interment will follow in Calvary cemetery. Deceased is survived by one son, Edward, a resident of Minneapolis. One brother and two sisters also mourn his passing. The brother is Leonard Mayer, aged resident of Shakopee. The sisters are Mrs. Gertrude Hilgers of Jordan and Mrs. Therese Maseline of Minneapolis. Jordan Independent April 14, 1932
