Services for J.G. Martin, Sr., 68, were held in the First Baptist Church. The businesses in Floydada closed at 3:00 pm so the owners could attend the services. A native of the Long Creek community in Parker County, Texas, Mr. Martin moved to Floydada in 1906. In 1908, he entered the lumber business, in 1910, he began his long career as a department store operator in Floydada. Operating with W.L. Morris and John P. Mathis in the firm of Mathis-Martin Company, he later was associated with his brother, Claud Martin, now of Austin the business for several years until the mid-1930s. He and his brother built the building at the corner of Fifth and California Street, which in the 1950s was occupied as the general headquarters of Lighthouse Electric Cooperative. In 1945, Mr. Marti sold his business to Walton Hale. In 1947, he became the proprietor of Miladies Speciality Shoppe at 120 West California.

Survived by his wife, whom he married on 28 November 1912; one son - J.G. Martin, Jr; three daughters - Mrs. Richard Walker, Mrs. Jake Watson, Miss Bettie Gail Martin; four brothers; one sister; six grandchildren.
