According to his birth certificate and other records, James was born JAMES RUFUS BROOKS, the son of Oscar Lee Brooks and Pearl Faubion . DNA disproved the Brooks family being his paternal line. His father was Lewis Woodfin Kitchens, who was born in North Carolina and moved to north Texas.
Following the death of Oscar Lee Brooks in 1926, and the death of his mother three years later, James was adopted by Louis Samuel and Jane Barton in 1929, and his name changed to JAMES LOUIS BARTON.
