Le maire : "Hier 26 septembre courant vers 19 heures, je me suis rendu chez Mme JEMBFORT pour affaires. J'ai trouvé chez cette dame 3 soldats me paraissant suspects, se disant américains et qui avaient déjà demandé à cette dame du tabac et du lait. Vu leur nationalité, il leur a été fait ensuite de la soupe, une omelette et un café. Je les ai interpellés en leur demandant leurs papiers, mais ils s'u sont refusés et l'un d'eux m'a exhibé une feuille détachée d'un calendrier ou se trouvait la carte du département. Je leur ai alors déclaré que j'allais les conduire l'un après l'autre au poste des passagers, en attendant l'arrivée de la gendarmerie. Sur ces mots, l'un d'eux sortit de sa poche un revolver a fait feu sur les personnes présentes et a atteint M. MARTIN Edmond d'un projectile au dessous du sein gauche. Aidé de M.M. GUELLON, ROBERT et GREGOIRE, nous avons désarmé ce militaire. Ses deux camarades voyant cela se sont enfuis et nous ne les avons plus revus. Dans cette lutte, ce forcené a été blessé assez griévement. Comme il n'y a pas de médecon au pays, je lui ai fait donner les premiers soins par les habitants et j'ai fait hospitalisé MARTIN aussitôt à Auxerre. Je vous remet le revolver enlevé des mains de l'américain."
Nous nous sommes ensuite rendus auprès du blessé et l'avons trouvé au poste, tout ensanglanté et paraissant dans le coma, étendu sur de la paille, portant une blessure en croix sur le sommet de la tête d'une longueur de 5 à 6 centimètres, une deuxième blessure derrière la tête et enfin une troisième au front.
M. le maire l'a fait nettoyer et transporté sur un lit. Nous n'avons pu l'interroger vu son état et ignorant s'il parlait le français. Nous avons relevé les inscriptions suivantes sur sa plaque d'identité : Harry Collier Co .M. 112 inf USA 1249457

Avant de vous prévenir de ce fait, je suis allé m'en rendre compte et je viens de constater en effet que l'un des trois américains auteur de la scène qui a eu lieu hier soir est étendu à terre, ne donnant plus signe de vie"
Au recu de cette déclaration, nous nous sommes rendus sur les lieux à 400 mètres environ du pays et avons constaté qu'un soldat américain était étendu sur le côté droit, la main droite allongée près de la tête, la main gauche le long du corps, son pantalon descendu jusqu'au ras des genoux, sa chemise relevée jusqu'au nombril. Le devant de la chemise était tâché de sang, nous l'avons relevée et avons constaté qu'il portait une blessure, paraissant faite par balle d'où le sang s'était échappé; une serviette de toilette enveloppait la plaie, près de lui se trouvaient 4 tas d'excréments paraissant avoir été fait par lui, il en avait encore au fondement. Il était vêté d'un costume militaire américain kaki foncé avec bandes molletières de même couleur et chaussé de brodequins, la tête nue. Ce cadavre était froid mais non rigide.(...) il a été trouvé porteur de divers papiers sans valeur, de photographies, d'un porte monnaie contenant la somme de 75fr 85, d'une plaque d'identité portant l'inscription suivante : Nelson B. On receipt of this statement, we went to the scene about 400 meters from the village and found that an American soldier was lying on the right side, the right hand lying near the head, the left hand along the body , his pants down to his knees, his shirt up to the navel. The front of the shirt was stained with blood, we raised it and found that it wore a wound, seemed made by bullet from where the blood had escaped; a towel was wrapped around the wound, near him were piles of excrement appearing to have been made by him, he still had some at the base. He was dressed in a dark khaki American military suit with similarly colored quilted bands and shod in boots, bareheaded. This corpse was cold but not rigid.
