Richard James "Jim" Metscher, 66, of Columbia died Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009.

He was born June 4, 1943, in Enid, Okla., to Richard and Jean Metscher.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Launer Auditorium at Columbia College. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St.

Mr. Metscher taught sociology and related subjects at Columbia College for 35 years, mostly in the Evening College. He was one of the first instructors in the Evening College and taught many students, from the beginning of the Evening College. Previously, he taught at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and the University of Missouri, where he did his graduate work. He was an inspiration to many students. Jim enjoyed Cardinal baseball, playing pool, and he enjoyed the Heidelburg Restaurant.

Mr. Metscher is survived by his wife of 30 years, Liz; and son Will; brother Charles and wife Terrye of Covington, Okla.; sister Linda Dudek and her
