General J.I. Amonette, who died on Wednesday, was one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of Memphis. He had spent a long and useful life here, and had earned a good name among his neighbors.
---

According to the Shelby County register of deaths cause of death was Yellow Fever. He is mistakenly listed as J.J. Ammonett. His age was listed as 70 at the time of death.

He was the son of Thomas Amonette and Jane Clarkson of Albemarle Virginia.

I believe James Amonette was originally married to Marguerite Bouge Fleetwood and they had a daughter named Laura Amonett. Marguerite died about 1849.

He then married a woman named Kate. They had a daughter in 1850 and I believe she died before 1860 but am not certain as the headstone date is broken off. James, Kate and Laura (his daughter by Marguerite) are listed in the 1860 Census of Memphis. In 1867 his wife Kate delivered a daughter but she was stillborn. Kate died the same day.

His next wife was named Lucy F. They had Kate, James I Jr., Clarkson and Alice White Amonette.

The Amonette family were devastated by the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1878. The first to succumb to the disease was 10 month old Clarkson who died on Sept 9. He was followed two days later on Sept 11 by his 8 year old sister Kate. Their father, James Sr also passed away on Sept 11 and he was followed to the grave by James Jr on Sept 20 1878.
