"C. H. DARROW, FORMER MAYOR, PASSES AWAY

Charles Harvey Darrow, former mayor of O'Fallon and well-known and highly respected citizen, passed peacefully away at his home at 6 o'clock Monday morning, after a lingering illness, due to the frailty incident to his advanced age of 78 years, three months and 17 days.

He had been ailing since the death of his wife last year and was acutely ill for several months. He became very weak some weeks ago and his death was expected at the time, but he rallied. This however was only of short duration and he again lapsed into serious illness, causing his death at the above-stated time.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the late residence of the deceased where services were conducted by Rev. Calvart, of Godfrey, a former minister at the local M. E. church. Burial was in the Shiloh cemetery.

Mr. Darrow was a son of the late Lemuel and Matilda Darrow, pioneer settlers in this community. He was born on a farm near Oak Hill, east of this city, March 2, 1844. His parents died when he was 13 years old. On May 11, 1889, he was united in marriage to Miss Jeanette Davis. Shortly after the marriage they took up their residence in this city, where the deceased resided since. No children were born to the union.

Some 50 years ago Mr. Darrow entered the hardware business in connection with a tin shop. At that time he was located on a lot what is now the Woman's Park opposite Cohen's store. He also engaged in the farm implement business. In 1914 he removed his tin shop to his residence on South Second street. At this time his health began to fail him and he prepared to enter another vocation. After months of experimental work, he patented a poultry coop for exhibition purposes which he placed on the market in 1915. The coop was of the folding type and up to the present time has been used by the larger shows in nearly all parts of the country. He continued to manage this business up to a short time before his death.

Mr. Darrow served two years as mayor of O'Fallon when it was only a village back in 1898. He was a public-spirited citizen and in his younger days took an active part in civic projects, always working for the benefit of O'Fallon. Mr. Darrow was an ardent poultry fancier and took a great interest in the O'Fallon Poultry Association, serving as president for a number of

years. He was also a member of the board of directors for many years. He remained active in the poultry association until a year ago, when the infirmities of old age held him confined to his home and yard.

His wife died suddenly June 11, 1921, and from that time on he began to age rapidly and often hoped that he may soon join her in the Great Beyond. The deceased is survived by one sister, Julia, wife of Assessor G. C. McGee and a large legion of distant relatives and friends."
