Patrick J. Barrett Jr. of Marshview died Nov. 24, 2012 at Memorial Hospital in Towanda, Pa.

He was born Oct. 8, 1920, the eldest of five sons of Patrick J. and Jane Anderson Barrett of Marshview. In 1949, he married Helen Elizabeth "Betty" Beirne of Towanda. Both graduated from Towanda High School in the class of 1938. They had four children and nine grandchildren.

Pat was a dairy farmer all his life, and enjoyed innovating and expanding the farm operation. He participated in many cooperative boards and conservative programs. His son Kevin joined him in 1973 and eventually took over the farm. With time on their own, the Barretts enjoyed traveling to Alaska, the Panama Canal, Ireland and other places. Pat was a member of the Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic parish in Towanda. He served on the Towanda School Board. In 2010, he was recognized for never having failed to vote — and he voted in 2011 and 2012.

Pat had a lifelong interest in the outdoors and hunting, pursuits that went well with the location and seasons of his farming. He shared the interest with his family and friends. The onset of the hunting seasons for duck, bear and deer were major events at the farm.

Pat shot rifles competitively with the Towanda Rifle and Pistol Club, enjoyed hunting dogs all his life and spent many years as president of the Beagle Club. In his later years he and friends shared a cabin near Pulaski, N.Y. where they hunted snowshoe hares with beagles through the late winter. He also hunted in Maine, Alaska, Idaho and Colorado. Always a reader, Pat had many interests and greatly enjoyed his family, visitors to the farm, his hunting dogs, and intently followed the farming, gas drilling activity and other events at the farm.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty; their four children; nine grandchildren and a large extended family.

He is survived by his son Patrick J. Barrett III of Canton and his wife Diane and their daughter Amanda.

He is also survived by his son Daniel J. Barrett of Athens his wife Janice and their children and spouses Catherine and Zachary Gima, Emily and Matthew Zahand, and Laura Barrett and fiancé Gary Marosy.

He is also survived by his son Kevin Barrett of Towanda, his wife Catherine and their daughters and spouses Samantha and John McDonald and Abigail and John Fitzpatrick.

He is also survived by his daughter Jennifer Gallagher, her husband Lawrence and their children Lawrence Gallagher, Elizabeth Gallagher, and John Gallagher.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by brothers Joseph, George, Eugene and Anthony.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Maryott-Bowen Funeral, Home, 217 York Ave., Towanda, Pa. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012 at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Third Street, Towanda, Pa. Interment will follow in Ss. Peter & Paul Cemetery, North Towanda, Pa. Contributions may be directed to St. Agnes School, 102 Third St., Towanda, PA 18848 in Patrick J. Barrett Jr.'s memory.
