My beloved grandmother was a brilliant girl who ran away from home daily as a young teen to go to school. When she was caught at it, her family married her off. Her first child, my mother, was born when Helen was 16 years old. Helen had four children who brought her joy and gave her 14 grandchildren.

Helen was the daughter of Ada Segel and Kalman Michel Bennett of Kovno, Lithuania. Her Hebrew name was Hinda after her maternal grandmother Hinda (nee Dimond) Segel.

Today, there are great grandchildren and great great grandchildren named after her.

My grandmother (we called her Bubbie, Yiddish for sweetheart, because when I was three, she would call me Bubbie, so that's what I called her and the name stuck with the rest of her grandchildren) liked the tributes she got from her favorite charity, Mizrachi. For a certain donation, she would get little diamonds on her pin. She was very proud of them. There are at least three diamonds on it--too small to be worth much, but they meant a lot to her.

She didn't like to get presents but she loved to give them. She made the best blintzes I ever ate and wonderful chopped liver which I would love to taste again.

My grandmother was a wonderful hostess. I would often stay by her and Papa for the Sabbath. She made the best dinners.

On holidays, we would all feast at Bubbie's house. After she died, there were no more family gatherings like those for holidays.
