Funeral will be at 11am Fridaay at Crestwood Chapel for Lowell Columbus (L C) Waldrop Sr, 82, Rainbow City, who died Tuesday, Feb 24, 1998 at Riverview Regional Medical Center. The Revs Dr Richard Trader and Richard Bradford ill officiate. Music will be provided by Miss Beth Philllips. Entombment in Crestwood Mausoleum. Crestwood Funeral Home is in charge.

Mr Waldrop was born in Cullman and graduated from Fairview High School in 1935. After he "made a crop," he moved to Alabama City, where he worked at Dwight Manufacturing Company. In 1936 he was employed by Republic Steel and continued there until 1972. During those years he helped organize and was a member of the United Steelworkers of America, Local 2176, where he served first as a pipe mills Beat Committeman and later as Financial Secretary for 20 years.

Upon his official retirement from Republic Steel, he was employed by USWA International as an internal auditor for District 35. He retired in 1983 to pursue his lifelong hobby of trot-line fishing.

Mr Waldrop was a member of Twelfth Street Baptist Church. Prior to his membership there, he was a lifelong member of Walnut Park Baptist Church. He was a member of Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees (SOAR), where he served as Secretary-Treasurer. He was dedicated and loyal union member, Democrat who never wavered, Braves fan, wonderful father, grandfather and kind, gentle husband.

Mr Waldrop was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Willie Lee "Bill" Shirley Waldrop; son, Lowell C Waldrop Jr; brother, Edward Dudley Waldrop; [step] grandchildren, Douglas Logan and Stevie Sharee Brackett; and special friend, Jack Ryan.

Mr Waldrop is survived by his wife, Frances Baswell Waldrop; children, Dr Gerald Wayne Waldrop, Helena, and Gail Waldrop Gamble, Tuscaloosa; daughter-in-law, Callie Edgar Waldrop; son-in-law, Dr Charles W Gamble; grandchildren, Leigh Waldrop Phillips, Helena, Natasha Waldrop Jackson, Attalla, David W Gamble, Tuscaloosa, and Mamie G Gamble, Thoreau, NM; sister, Nolia Waldrop Hulsey, Cullman; sister-in-law, Velma Waldrop, Arab, and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his wife's children, Ronnie King, Oxford, Sherry King Logan, Judy King Brackett and Kathy King Elrod, all of Gadsden; their spouses, Peggy King, Mike Logan, Steve Brackett and Jimmy Elrod; grandchildren, Daniel Logan, Stephen "Bo" Brackett, Angie Elrod, Kari Simmons, Kelli Elrod and Alicia King Minyard, all of Gadsden, Angela King Benefield, Attalla, Kelly Birchfield and Lynn Shelnutt, Oxford, and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Dafford Brewster, Lamar Chastain, Gerald Phillips, Clarence Rhea, James "Robbie" Roberson, Kenneth Roberson Sr, Lewis Shirley and Harold "Baldy" Walker.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Ronnie King, Joe Shirley, Dr Ralph N Wesley and Harry Yocum.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Dr Wesley, the CCU staff of Riverview Regional Medical Center, Dr Boyce White and Dr Donald Provenzano for their attention and thoughtful care.

The family will receive flowers or memorials may be made to Twelfth Street Baptist Church or the First United Methodist Church of Attalla.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 8 tonight.
