Jerry B. Hulsey, 90, of Fort Payne and Auburn passed away Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at EAMC Bethany House in Auburn. He was born Nov. 28, 1915, in Sylvania.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Juanita Horton Hulsey; his parents, Hilbert Whit and Artie Dickson Hulsey; his brothers, Jesse H. Hulsey and Forrest D. Hulsey, Cullman, and Floyd A. Hulsey, Waverly County, Fla.; and his sisters, Jewel H. Harper, Gardendale, and Gladys H. Rogers, Cullman.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Cheryl Hulsey, Auburn; grandson, Richard H. Hulsey Jr., and his wife, Kimberly, of Fort Payne; brother-in-law, Bill Horton; and several nephews and nieces.

Mr. Hulsey graduated from Jacksonville State Teacher's College and was a member of the basketball and baseball teams while there. He was a teacher and coach at Lawrence County High School before serving from 1942-1946 in the 20th Air Force during World War II. Mr. Hulsey was a Special Services Officer in the European-African-Middle Eastern and Asiatic-Pacific Theaters. He later earned a master's degree and education specialist doctorate from George Peabody College in Nashville.

As head basketball coach at DeKalb County High School from 1948-1956, his basketball teams compiled a record of 160-36. Many of his former players referred to him affectionately as "Coach Hulsey" long after he left coaching. He was inducted into the DeKalb County Sports Hall of Fame as a charter member in 1997. Mr. Hulsey became principal of DeKalb County High School in 1956. He retired from Gadsden State Community College in 1981 after serving 15 years as the chair of the Social Sciences Division. Among his many interests, Coach Hulsey was an avid golfer and played regularly until 2004.

Mr. Hulsey was an active member, teacher, and emeritus deacon at First Baptist Church in Fort Payne prior to moving to the Auburn area in 2001.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel, Fort Payne. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today.

Former members of his basketball teams and members of the Baraca Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church, Fort Payne, will serve as honorary pallbearers.
