Michael W. Yarcheck, 79, died Saturday, November 2.

A resident of Akron for most of his life, Mr. Yarcheck was a graduate of Garfield High School. On June 1, 1940 he joined the Akron Police Department where he served as a police officer for 46 years. He was a member of the Retired Policemens Association, A.A.R.P, had formerly been active with the downtown YMCA. A member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, he formerly belonged to Annunciation.

Michael W. Yarcheck was a fitness buff and an Akron police sergeant who retired in 1986 after being a police officer for 46 years.
He was the oldest active duty officer on the Akron Police Department at the time of his retirement.
Chief Philip G. Barnes recalled that when Yarcheck was a student at Garfield High School he was honored for doing 1,000 sit-ups. He graduated from Garfield in 1931.
"He loved to dance and was an excellent swimmer and diver," Barnes said.
' He was also a good worker who went about his job without any fanfare. He was very steady.'

Maj. Leonard Strawderman recalled an incident more than 30 years ago when Yarcheck -- then in his 40s -- chased down a teen-ager who had attacked a worker at the Juvenile Detention Center.
While a police officer, Mr. Yarcheck worked as a detective in the juvenile unit for about 25 years. He also worked in the traffic bureau, vice squad and patrol subdivision.
In 1957, he received a commendation for arresting a robber and for his investigative work in clearing up 16 burglaries in East Akron.

Mr. Yarcheck, who suffered from diabetes, finished his career working at the information desk.
The desk, where officers took reports and answered questions from the public, used to be on the second floor of the police station.
It was common to see Mr. Yarcheck jogging in place behind the desk.

His survivors included wife, Polly (Sabadosh); daughter, Debbie Yarcheck of Akron; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Patty of Cuyahoga Falls; sisters Rose Dixon of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Eva Sedlack of Oakland Park, Fla. brother, Steve of N. Canton; granddaughter, Courtney; numerous nieces, and nephews.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9, Tuesday, at the Dunn-Quigley-Ciriello & Carr Falls Chapel (Portage Trail at 8th Street). Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m., Wednesday, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment Chestnut Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Heart Association.
