Joseph Lee Burrell died Wednesday April 23, 2008 at home with his family around him. He was born May 9, 1926 in Glendora, CA. Joe leaves his wife of 60 years, Phyllis; a son, David (Cathy); daughter, DeAnn Helms (Dennis); grandchildren, Todd, Tori, Megan and Chad; step-grandchildren, Nathan and Matt; step-great-grandchildren, Taylor and James.

Joe was a sweet, fun loving man who always had a sparkle in his eyes and loved his family above all else. His grandchildren were his pride and joy; he was so proud of them and their accomplishments.

Joe served in the Navy in the South Pacific during WWII aboard the USS Okanogan and USS Chicago participating in the battle of Okinawa. He was a member of the American Legion.

He and Phyllis made several trips across the U.S. traveling the back roads of the country he loved ... a true patriot. Joe loved music of the 40's, and he loved pinochle (double deck), playing with the guys at the Elks on Wednesdays. Joe loved houseboating on Lake Shasta, loved softball, loved traveling Highway 101 and loved his hometown, Glendora, California, a town Joe said was a paradise for a kid to grow up in.

Joe retired from Prudential Insurance Company in 1982. He was a meat cutter when the family moved to Chico in 1961, working in many of the local markets.

A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2008 at Newton-Bracewell and a private burial will take place at Glen Oaks Memorial Park.

The family wishes to thank Enloe Hospice for their kindness and loving care of Joe in his last days. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, American Lung Association, Butte County Humane Society, Enloe Hospice or charity of your choice in care of the funeral home. If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I could walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
My heart's still active in sadness and secret tears still flow
What it meant to lose you No one can ever know.
But now I know you want us to mourn for you no more
To remember all the happy times life still has much in store.
Since you'll never be forgotten I pledge to you today
A hallowed place within my heart is where you'll always stay.
I knew you for a moment. Author Unknown. Published in Chico Enterprise-Record on April 25, 2008.
