Vance was the son of John Wilson Callahan and Elizabeth Gordon. He signed up in Indiana to fight in the Black Hawk War in 1832. He was awarded land on Black River for his service. He first married Esther Smith in 1824 and had 3 children. In 1838 he divorced Esther. In 1839 he was remarried to Malinda Sutterfield whom with he had 9 children,Vance Jr.,John Elizabeth,Lucy,David ,Allen,Christofer Columbus,Eliza, and William. He was chosen to serve as the Justice of the peace in the year 1850. He passed away in 1856
