Emil was born in Famulki Krolewskie, Russian Poland to Albertine Bielert, an unwed women. He immigrated to the US and Cleveland, Ohio, at age 3, where he live with his mother and her husband, Wilhelm Brandt.

Before his marriage to Hulda Foth 6 Oct 1928 at Zion Luthern Church in Cleveland, OH he changed his surname from Bielert to Brandt. Hulda died from complications of child birth, leaving Emil a widower with a child.

He married a second time, to Natalie Krause 20 Jan 1934 in Cleveland, Ohio. This couple had one child.
