R.H. BOWMAN KILLED SUNDAY BY A.E. LIGHT

R.H. (Bob) Bowman was shot and killed Sunday at his home near Mayberry by A.E. Light, son of Austin Light, a near neighbor. We have not been able to get a complete account of the tragedy, but the story of the defense is substantially as follows:

Light, with two other parties, was at Bowman's house when Bowman began to curse and abuse Light's uncle, who was not present. Light resented this and asked him to stop. Bowman became angry with him and ordered him out of the house. As Light started away from the house Bowman threw a rock at him which struck him in the mouth knocking out four teeth. Light then called to F.B Lynch and O.K. Terry who were with him that he was hurt and that they leave. The three men had gone about a hundred yards from the house when they saw Bowman coming after them with his shotgun and calling to Light's companions to get out of the way. As he raised his gun to fire Light shot him through the chest with a .32 S&W Special, killing him instantly. Bowman's gun was also discharged but the shot went wild.

Light was arrested and brought here to jail to await a further disposition of the case. Bowman was a man passed middle age, with a family. Light is 22 years of age.
