William H. Barbee was born in October 1869 in Iowa. He married Lena Mayer on April 30, 1889, in Rock Island, Illinois. William and Lena spent most of their married life in Topeka, Kansas, and raised two children: Bessie, born 1890; Mae Alice, born 1892. William worked for the Santa Fe railway for many years with jobs that included machinist and roundhouse foreman. Back in those days, much of his work dealt with maintaining steam locomotives. William died on August 9, 1946, after a short illness.

Mr. Barbee worked for the Santa Fe railway for 36 years and retired in 1936. He was a member of the Baptist church, Topeka lodge No. 17, A.F. and A.M., the Scottish Rite and the Arab Shrine.
