Mr. Davis served heroically in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. As a 2nd Lieutenant serving in the 104th Timberwolf Division in Germany, he was wounded in action in 1944, for which he was granted a Purple Heart and then was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry. In Korea, as a Captain with the 145th Field Artillery Battalion, Mr. Davis received the second of his Bronze Stars for meritorious service during 1951-52.
Mr. Davis assumed duties as Claims Manager for The Cincinnati Insurance Company in 1957, eventually becoming a senior claims executive and general counsel. When he retired in 1988, he was President of the Cincinnati Casualty Company, a subsidiary of the Cincinnati Financial Corporation. As Robert B. Morgan stated upon Mr. Davis's retirement, he was "Truly a man for all seasons."
Mr. Davis was involved in such professional organizations as the Cincinnati, Ohio State and American Bar Association, the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Alumni Association, the Ohio State Alumni Association, Federation of Insurance Counsel, International Association of Insurance Counsel, American Judicature Society, and served as the President of the Queen City Association. Mr. Davis also avidly supported the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Zoo.
On May 1, 1948, Mr. Davis married the former Katherine Metzger, who survives him. Also surviving are his children Lynn Davis Spies and her husband Richard Spies, of Lynchburg, VA; Beth Davis Bartlett and her husband Michael Bartlett, of Santa Barbara, CA; K. Meg Davis of Terrace Park, OH; and Hayden D. Davis III, and his wife Michele Cappel Davis, of Cincinnati; three grandchildren: Allegra Bartlett, Hayden D. Davis IV, and Connor Davis; and one step-son, Shane Cappel. Two sisters also survive: Elizabeth Ralstin of Otway, OH, and Frances Walker of Mt. Lebanon, PA.
