During the early years of their marriage, John's widowed father and younger brothers, Buck and Frederick O'Neil, lived with John's family.
John was a farmer in the Edwardsville area. He later worked as a custodian for schools in South Roxana, Illinois until his retirement in 1959.
At the time of his death at St. Joseph's Hospital, John was 98 years, 10 months and 25 days old.
He was survived by 3 daughters, Clara Hessel of Marine, Illinois, Mary Knipping of South Roxana, and Mabel Southard of South Roxana; 2 sons, Charles O'Neil of Edwardsville, Illinois, and Jesse O'Neil of South Roxana; 15 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-great-grandchild.
Visitation was held on 08 Apr 1976 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River. Funeral services were conducted at the South Roxana United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. the following afternoon. John was buried next to his wife, Emma, who passed away in 1959.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the church.
