The son of Henry Alexander Ballew and Lola Ethel Kemp, Herschel lived in Williamsville, Missouri before he joined the Merchant Marines in 1943. He returned to civilian life in 1949 and moved to Hartford, Madison County, Illinois.

Herschel was married to Mrs. Georgia Pearl (nee Morgan) Farlow. She was the mother of 3 surviving children from her first marriage. Herschel and Georgia were the parents of 6 children. The family moved to South Roxana around 1953.

Hershel was a member of Southern Baptist Church in South Roxana. He belonged to Wood River Labor Local 338.

His wife, Georgia, was killed in 1957 in a head-on accident when the car he was driving slid on an icy road and was hit by a truck. She was 39-years-old and was survived by 9 children ranging in age from 11 months to 17-years-old.

Children from first marriage: 2 step-daughters, 1 step-son, 2 daughters, 4 sons.

After Georgia's death, Herschel married Vera "Vivian" Morgan on 08 May 1958 in South Roxana. Vivian was Georgia's younger sister.

Herschel and Vivian had 1 child, but the baby died at birth in 1959.

Children from second marriage: 1 daughter.

Herschel was a laborer for the Barton Lumber Company in South Roxana. He and a co-worker were using a trench digger to lay a sewer line in South Roxana on the morning of 26 May 1965.

The 9' deep trench suddenly collapsed, and Herschel was buried under 4 feet of dirt. His co-worker and others attempted unsuccessfully to rescue him and placed an inhalator mask over his face as soon as they could reach him. Once he was freed, he was rushed by ambulance to Wood River Township Hospital where he was pronounced dead of suffocation just after noon.

Herschel was survived by his second wife, Vivian; his mother and father; 2 daughters; 4 sons; 2 step-daughters; 1 step-son; 5 brothers; and 2 sisters.

In addition to his first wife, Herschel was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Brianna.

Visitation was held at Marks Mortuary on 27 May 1965. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. the following afternoon at the First Southern Baptist Church in South Roxana. Herschel was buried next to his first wife, Georgia.

Just over 2 years after Herschel's death, 1 of his sons, Henry Herschel "Hersch" Ballew, was killed in Vietnam at the age of 18.
