Robert Beverly Marriott, 98, of Virginia Beach and formerly of Newport News, died Sept. 3, 2012. He was predeceased by his wife, Jane Elizabeth Marriott. Mr. Marriott was an alumnus of Furman University in South Carolina. He attended Northwestern University representing the state of New York in educational training for the WCTU.
In 1941, he was employed by North American Aircraft Company as the chief contract flight dispatcher for the P-51 program. In 1947, he taught and coached for George Wythe Jr. High School in Hampton. He was appointed Director of Transportation in 1950 for Warwick County, which became the City of Newport News, retiring in 1977. In 1951 he became the interim pastor for Grafton Christian Church, serving until 1958. Later, he was an active member of First Christian Church in Newport News. Mr. Marriott was a member of the Virginia Association of School Executives, the Virginia Association of School Business Officials, and chairman of the Organizational Committee for the Tidewater Transportation Officials. He was chairman of the Newport News Safety Commission. A graveside service was held Saturday September 8th at 1 p.m. at Grafton Christian Church with the Rev. John Falk and the Rev. Marcia Fusion officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grafton Christian Church, 109 Brick Church Rd., Hampton, 23666, First Christian Church of Newport News, 1458 Todds Lane, Hampton, or the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad.
