Sterlen S. Freed, 96, of Harrisburg, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012, in the Community General Hospital.
Born in Enhaut on October 4, 1916, he was the son of the late George S. and Elizabeth Shaffer Freed.
Sterlen operated Freed's Grocery, Paxtang, and also built and operated the Parasol Restaurant, Harrisburg. He was also employed by Abbotts's Dairies where he delivered ice cream and other dairy products to local businesses. Sterlen was a graduate of the former John Harris High School. He was an US Army veteran having served in World War II. Sterlen was a charter member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Paxtang. He was also a member of the Shellsville VFW Post 9639. When he was not working, Sterlen enjoyed cooking and driving to see local sights.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene Hurd Freed in August of 1984; and a grandson, Brian A. Ebright on December 18, 2005.
Sterlen is survived by his two daughters, Linda F. Ebright wife of Paul A. of Hummelstown, and Marcia E. Freed wife of Matthew H. Dankman of Harrisburg; three grandchildren, Sarah E. Ebright of Basalt, CO, Alex M. Dankman, and Marissa I. Dankman both of Harrisburg; and a sister, Rhea F. Leib of Harrisburg.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at 11 AM in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 3700 Rutherford Street, Harrisburg, with The Rev. Kathleen J. Baker, STM, officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Lower Paxton Township. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family in the church on Saturday from 10 AM until time of the services.
Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, is handling the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be sent to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 3700 Rutherford Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111.
