The son of Abraham & Henrietta (Carpenter) Killian, in 1850, he lived with his family in Ephrata, Lancaster County. In 1860, he was a tobacconist (later a carpenter) living in Lancaster Borough and stood 5' 9" tall with dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster County August 7, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. I, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863. He also enlisted in Lancaster June 23, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 4 as a private with Co. C, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pa), and re-enrolled at Scranton, Lackawanna County, January 5, 1864, with Co. I of the one-year organization. He deserted but returned to duty and honorably discharged with his company July 8, 1865.

His wife's name was Rebecca.
