Peleg Ballard, the second man to settle in Batavia Kill, served in the Seventh Dutchess county militia. The deed of his purchase of land in Vega, dated Dec. 24, 1794, is in the possession of his descendant of the sixth generation, John F. Ballard. His descendants to the eighth generation still live in Vega.

Peleg had six children, at least two of his sons, James and Jeduthan Ballard, both of whom died at 87, are buried in the Vega cemetery, and a t least one of his daughters, Elizabeth, who was married to David Mead, and who died in 1854 at 78.

The Peleg Ballard who was the second settler of Batavia Kill was an active man in 1794, about 40 years old, and younger than his uncle Peleg Ballard b. Plainfield CT 6 Dec 1728 [who would have been in his late 60s when Batavia Kill was pioneered, so too old for all that hard work!.....and who probably died in Dutchess Co. NY before 1790]. For the 1790 census, father John Ballard is listed in Frederickstown, Dutchess Co. NY with a large household (1,6,9), apparently with his wife and 3 sons and 5 daughters and with son Peleg's wife and family (3 sons and 2 daughters) as son Peleg is off to find and work land before buying land about 1794 in Delaware Co. NY. Some of the ballard research was published in TAG 85:298-9, 309-312; more is planned to be in print sometime soon.....
