The Winters family moved to Guadalupe County, Texas, by 1850 where 8-year old Elisha appeared on the Texas Census as a member of his parents' household. In 1860 Elisha was still a member of his parents' household in Hays County, Texas, where his father owned and operated a mill. However, a series of tragic events occurred in the Winters family soon thereafter. Elisha's brother James died in 1861 and his brothers John and William died within a week of each other in 1862. John J. Thomas, Elisha's brother-in-law died the same year. Elisha's father William Carvin Winters died two years later in 1864 in Hays County. Elisha's sister Mary Emeline Winters's second husband Adam Starr disappeared and was presumed dead in 1868, and her third husband Franklin Kneiber disappeared and was presumed died in July 1870.
At some point during this series of tragic events, members of the Winters family moved to Frio County, not far from San Antonio. Lavina and Elisha sold their shares in the mill to Elisha's brother-in-law John M. Cude. By the August 1870 Census, Elisha, now 29, and his widowed mother Lavina, 55, were living in Frio County within the San Antonio Post Office area. Next door is Elisha's three-times widowed sister Mary Emeline Winters Thomas Starr Kneiber, 33, and her children, and two doors away is Elisha's former sister-in-law Amanda M. Davidson Winters Long, 28, and her children and second husband Tobias A. Long.
Elisha was only 30 when he too died. His death came on July 28, 1872. He was buried in Brummett Cemetery beside his brothers James, John, and William.
