“Mabel Peter, of pioneer families, dies”
Retired teacher Mabel Crane Peter, member of two pioneer Sonoma County families, died yesterday at her Santa Rosa home. She was 91. Mrs. Peter, a native Santa Rosan, was the daughter of Ellis Tarleton Crane, who was born in Santa Rosa in 1854, and Josephine Bagley Crane, who was born in Healdsburg in 1859. Members of the Bagley family were early settlers in the Guerneville area, while the Crane family settled in the Santa Rosa area.
Mrs. Peter was graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1907 with Phi Beta Kappa honors. She taught for two years in Angel’s Camp, then taught science and mathematics at Santa Rosa High School from 1910 to 1917. She spent two years in Alaska, then returned to Santa Rosa and worked as a substitute teacher until the death of her husband, Jesse Peter Jr., in 1944. Peter was a manual arts teacher and curator of the Santa Rosa Junior College museum. Mrs. Peter served as a home teacher from 1944 until retirement in 1959. She was a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Saturday Afternoon Club.
She leaves her son, Temple Peter, Santa Rosa, and daughter, Mrs. Kathleen Woods, Walnut Creek. [Mrs. Kathleen Woods is her sister, not her daughter]. The Rev. Robert Heydon of Frist Baptist Church will officiate at 2 p.m. services Wednesday from the Eggen & Lance Mortuary. Burial will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery.
