John was the second of seven children of Gordon Reid, a shoemaker and church sexton, and Janet Shirress.

He was baptized on Feb. 26, 1815 in Udny, Aberdeenshire.

John married Jane Cummings on June 8, 1849 in Old Machar (now Woodside), Aberdeen. They had four children: Ann about 1851, John Cummins in 1853, Jane in 1855 and Isabella in 1858.

He was a master stone mason and a member of the Lodge of St. Machar, No. 319, in Woodside.

He died at 3 Bridge Street, Woodside of senile debility.

Inscription

Erected by Herbert and Adam Ritchie in memory of JOHN REID, contractor, Woodside died 1889 aged 68 years; his wife JANE CUMMING died 1891 aged 70 years. And their daughter ANN REID died 1931 aged 80 years, and her husband ALEXANDER PHILIP died 1932 aged 83 years and their son ALEXANDER REID died 1886 aged 5 years.
