Elma Johnson was born into a family that would eventually number 11 children. Her father, Alfred Gustav Johnson (1848-1932), was native to Sweden. He came to the United States in the 1860s, returned to Sweden once for a short period, and then again returned to the U.S.

Elma's mother was born Josephine Lett (1855-1929), the daughter of Charles H. Lett (1819-1905) and Caroline (Johnson) Lett (1824-1904). Her family came to the United States from Sweden in 1849, and first used the surname "Anderson" for a few years before settling on Lett and procuring farmland in Des Moines County, Iowa.

Alfred and Josephine Johnson made their home in Morning Sun, Iowa. Her father was a stone mason.

Elma was married December 5, 1907, in Louisa County, Iowa, to John Herman Delzell (1886-1942), the son of a well-known Morning Sun family whose descendants are still in the area today.

Elma and John had a daughter, Louise Nettie, born in 1908. Elma died of the flu and pneumonia in the epidemic of 1918, her husband remarried and moved to Davenport, Iowa, Their daughter, Louise (1908-1974), was married to Fern Baldwin Brookhart in 1926.

Morning Sun (IA), December 26 (1918). -- Elma Lenora, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Johnson, was born January 26, 1886, and died December 24, 1918, of influenza-pneumonia. She lived here her entire life. She graduated in 1904 from the High school. She was married to John H. Delzell December 5, 1907. Those left to mourn, besides the aged parents, bereaved husband, and little daughter, Louise, are the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. George Eden of Conesville, Lena and Edna at home, Robert of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania), Alvin of Tipton, Iowa, Fred of Denver, Colorado, and Carl of the A. E. F. in France.

Funeral services over the remains of Mrs. Delzell will be held at the home, two miles northeast of town. Friday at 2:30 p.m. conducted by her pastor., Reverend J. S. Decker. Interment in Elmwood cemetery.
