of 38) cards that refer to him as Major & Surgeon. Since there is no evidence in his CSR that he was appointed as a Major, this appears to be a reference to the fact that Confederate physicians had the pay rank of a Major in the line. Confederate Surgeons did not have command authority over soldiers in the line.
