Frank L. DeShong was one of the oldest citizens of Smith County. He grew up in what is now known as the old Mt. Zion settlement eight miles south of Tyler. He married and moved to Tyler soon after the war. Mr. DeShong had been in failing health since the death of his wife, several months earlier. He died on June 22, 1908.

Mr. DeShong was survived by three daughters: Mrs. Felix Smith, Oklahoma; Mrs. J.P. Taylor and Mrs. James Kilfoyle, of Tyler; and a son, John DeShong, who is in the West; and grandchildren. Mr. Smith, his daughter Miss Topsy, and son Clint arrived in Tyler a few days earlier. Other grandchildren were also in Tyler. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.
