Sarah was born to David Layne and Lucinda Bybee.

She married Horace Burr Owens September 3, 1845 in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois.

Sally Ann and Horace traveled in the Benjamin Gardner Company of Mormons who traveled to Salt Lake City in 1852. There were other Layne and Owens family members traveling with them. The wagon train arrived in Salt Lake City September 24 to 27, 1852.

Sally Ann and Horace had twelve children together:
